Cooley’s Hedge-Nettle: The Rough Native Wildflower That Doesn’t Sting

After watching this native plant grow from fresh green shoots, I finally saw its deep pink-purple flowers open on our property in Southwest Washington. |
Some plants become interesting because we pass them without knowing their story. I first noticed this wildflower as green leaves among grasses on our property in Southwest Washington. With no flowers yet, it looked a little like a nettle, so I kept watching it.
As the season continued, upright stems appeared, followed by small pink buds and deep pink-purple flowers. After some flowers faded, persistent structures formed a seed-head-like pattern around the upper stem. Watching these changes reminded me that plant identification is often a process, not a single moment.
A Wild Plant I Watched Change Through the Season
The young plants were low and partly hidden. Later, four-sided stems rose above them, tiny hairs became visible, and opposite leaf pairs were easier to see. By midsummer, vivid flowers made this damp edge of our property feel like a small native wildflower garden.

What Is This Plant?
This is Cooley’s hedge-nettle, scientifically known as Stachys cooleyae. It is a native perennial in the mint family, Lamiaceae.
Botanical names vary among references. Washington sources use Stachys cooleyae, while some databases list it as Stachys chamissonis var. cooleyae. I use Stachys cooleyae here.
Despite its common name, it is not stinging nettle. Stinging nettle belongs to a different family and has specialized hairs that cause a burning sensation. Cooley’s hedge-nettle is visibly hairy, but its hairs are non-stinging.
How to Identify Cooley’s Hedge-Nettle
No wild plant should be identified from one feature alone. A square stem may suggest the mint family, but the whole plant must be examined.
Here are the features I observed:
A square stem: The upright stem has four noticeable, finely hairy sides.
Opposite leaves: Each leaf grows directly across from another at the same point on the stem.
Broad, toothed leaves: Their pointed blades have coarse, rounded teeth and a nettle-like texture.
Fine hairs: Both leaf surfaces and the stems are hairy. The leaf underside also shows raised veins.
Pink-purple flowers: The tubular, two-lipped flowers form separated clusters around the upper stem.
After flowering: Hairy calyces remain around the stem, creating a seed-head appearance. The plant forms small nutlets rather than one large pod.
These clues are much stronger when used together: square stem, opposite leaves, rough non-stinging hairs, pink tubular flowers, and moist growing habitat.

Rough to the Touch—but It Does Not Sting
The leaves and stems feel coarse and slightly bristly, but I did not feel the burning associated with stinging nettle. I also noticed a faint earthy, musky scent, somewhat like elderberry or burdock leaves to me. That comparison is personal, not an identification feature. Touch and smell may add to an observation, but the plant’s visible features and habitat must also agree.

Where Does Cooley’s Hedge-Nettle Grow?
Cooley’s hedge-nettle is native to western North America. The Burke Herbarium records it in Washington on both sides of the Cascade crest, with a broader range extending from Alaska south to California.
It favors moist forest understory, woodland openings and margins, clearings, streamside areas, wet low ground, and damp roadsides, from lower to moderate mountain elevations. As a rhizomatous perennial, it can spread underground and form colonies.
My patch grows in soil that stays moist near the forest edge. Its Washington bloom season is generally June through August, and watching it from early leaves to full bloom helped me connect its different stages.
Traditional Uses Recorded in Ethnobotanical Sources
Ethnobotanical records describe knowledge belonging to particular Indigenous communities; they should not be treated as universal modern instructions for eating or using a plant. Washington Native Plant Society material notes that some Alaska Native peoples traditionally ate the young shoots.
A 1995 Clayoquot Sound Scientific Panel report records Cooley’s hedge-nettle being laid under fish to help keep the fish clean.
Historical use does not prove that every plant part, growth stage, or preparation is safe for everyone today. I did not taste this plant, and I am not recommending it as a wild vegetable.
Why I Did Not Harvest It From Our Property
Although this plant grows on our family property, vehicles regularly pass close to the patch. Roadside plants may be exposed to dust, exhaust particles, runoff, vehicle fluids, or maintenance chemicals, and washing may not remove every contaminant. I therefore photographed it instead of harvesting it. A plant can be correctly identified and still grow in the wrong place for food gathering.
For me, safe foraging means asking two separate questions:
Do I know exactly what this plant is?
Is this a clean, legal, and appropriate place to harvest it?
If either answer is uncertain, I leave the plant where it is.
⚠️ Foraging Safety
Never identify a wild plant from one photograph or one feature alone.
Compare its stem, leaf arrangement, surfaces, flowers, fruit, habitat, and season.
Use current regional guides and reliable botanical resources; consult a qualified local expert when possible.
Traditional use alone does not establish modern safety. Species, plant part, stage, preparation, amount, and personal health can matter.
Confirm that harvesting is permitted at that location.
Avoid roadsides, sprayed areas, polluted water, industrial sites, pet-waste areas, and places affected by runoff.
Harvest conservatively and leave healthy plants and habitat behind for wildlife, pollinators, and future growth.

Why This Plant Became Memorable to Me
At first, this was simply another patch of green. Then I noticed the opposite leaves, square stem, tiny hairs, pink buds, and bright flowers. That slow change is one of my favorite parts of learning wild plants. Cooley’s hedge-nettle may feel rough, but it does not sting—and it has an identity all its own.
