Western Rattlesnake Plantain: The Forest Plant That Is Actually an Orchid

These patterned leaves caught my attention while I was searching for matsutake
in a Pacific Northwest forest.

I have explored the mountains of the Pacific Northwest for several years, but the summer of 2026 was the first time I spent so much time walking through the forest specifically looking for mushrooms.

The weather had felt unusually unpredictable to me, and then I began hearing surprising reports that matsutake mushrooms were appearing in the middle of summer. Matsutake is a mushroom I normally associate with fall, so naturally my curiosity led me back into the forest.

Near the places where we found American matsutake, I also noticed some of the unusual plants that make a Pacific Northwest conifer forest feel so mysterious. There was Candystick (Allotropa virgata), Gnome Plant (Hemitomes congestum), and Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). None of these plants guarantees that matsutake will be nearby, but seeing them made me slow down and pay closer attention to the whole forest—not only to the mushrooms beneath my feet.

Then I noticed a plant I had never really stopped to examine before.

The Patterned Leaves That Stopped Me

Even from a distance, these leaves did not look like ordinary solid-green forest leaves. They formed a low rosette on the ground, and a pale stripe ran along the center of each dark green leaf. Some of the leaves also showed faint lighter veins, but the markings were much softer and more irregular than the dramatic white netting shown in many photographs online.

When I moved closer, I wondered whether it might be some kind of wild orchid. I opened my plant-identification app, and the suggested name immediately made me curious: Western Rattlesnake Plantain.

Its scientific name is Goodyera oblongifolia.

An identification app is only a starting point for me, especially when I am seeing a plant for the first time. After returning home, I compared my photographs with botanical descriptions and herbarium images. The basal rosette, oblong leaves, prominent pale midrib, and forest habitat all matched Western Rattlesnake Plantain.

That identification gave me an even bigger question: Why does an orchid have the name “Rattlesnake Plantain”?

Why Is It Called Rattlesnake Plantain?

The name becomes easier to understand when we separate it into two parts.

The word plantain most likely refers to the broad leaves growing in a basal rosette, which can remind us of the familiar plantains in the genus Plantago. Broadleaf plantain is one of my favorite wild edible plants, so I could see why the rosette and the strong leaf veins might have inspired the comparison.

But Western Rattlesnake Plantain is not a true plantain. It is not in the genus Plantago. It belongs to Orchidaceae—the orchid family.

The word rattlesnake is connected to the pale markings on its dark leaves, which were compared to snakeskin. Historical accounts also record an old belief that the plant could be used for rattlesnake bites. That history helps explain the common name, but it is not modern medical guidance. A snakebite is a medical emergency and requires immediate professional treatment.

What Western Rattlesnake Plantain Looks Like

Western Rattlesnake Plantain is a native evergreen perennial orchid that grows from a short rhizome. Its leaves stay close to the forest floor in a basal rosette. They are dark green and typically show white mottling, especially along the central midrib.

The amount of pale patterning can vary. Some plants show a stronger network of light veins, while others—like the plant I photographed—have a broad pale center stripe with much subtler markings toward the leaf edges. A leaf does not need to look perfectly netted or symmetrical to fit this species.

When it flowers, a slender, glandular-hairy stalk rises from the center of the leaves. The stalk can reach roughly 10 to 18 inches tall and carries a close cluster of small, pale greenish-white flowers.

Look closely and the flowers reveal their orchid structure. The upper sepal and two petals form a small forward-facing hood, while the lower lip is swollen, deeply concave, and slightly curved. The individual flowers are tiny—only about 6 to 10 millimeters long—so their shape can be easy to miss unless we kneel down or use a close-up lens.

In Washington, the Burke Herbarium records Western Rattlesnake Plantain flowering from June through August. The exact timing can vary with elevation, location, and seasonal conditions.

Where Does It Grow in the Pacific Northwest?

Western Rattlesnake Plantain is native to Washington and is widely distributed through mountainous and forested areas on both sides of the Cascade crest. It grows in dry to moist forests from sea level to middle elevations in the mountains.

Its wider range extends from Alaska south to California and east through the Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes region, and parts of eastern North America. Across that range, it occurs in conifer forests and mixed woodlands.

The shaded conifer forest where I found it made perfect sense for this species. Its green rosette blended into the moss, needles, and forest floor, yet the pale line along each leaf was just bright enough to make me stop.

A Forest Orchid With a Fungal Connection

Perhaps the most fitting part of this discovery is that I found this orchid while looking for mushrooms.

Orchid seeds are extremely small and contain very little stored nutrition. To germinate and establish, orchids depend on compatible mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. That hidden fungal relationship is part of the orchid’s life from its earliest stages.

This is one reason a wild orchid that seems easy to move may fail after being dug up. What we see above the soil is connected to a much larger underground community that cannot simply be carried away with the leaves.

Is Western Rattlesnake Plantain Edible?

The common name can be confusing, especially for anyone who knows broadleaf or narrowleaf plantain as edible wild greens. However, Western Rattlesnake Plantain is an orchid, not an edible Plantago.

I do not treat this plant as wild food, and I did not harvest it. I also do not recommend eating it based on its common name or an identification app. To me, its greatest value is ecological and ornamental—best appreciated exactly where it grows.

Wildflower collection rules vary by land manager and location. The U.S. Forest Service advises that removing wildflowers can reduce reproduction, affect animals and pollinators, prevent other visitors from enjoying them, and often results in unsuccessful transplantation. The safest and most respectful choice is to photograph native orchids and leave them undisturbed.

A Small Discovery That Changed the Way I Saw the Forest

I entered the forest thinking about matsutake. I came home thinking about an orchid.

That is one of the things I love most about spending time outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. A search for one species often introduces me to another. Matsutake, Candystick, Gnome Plant, Beargrass, and Western Rattlesnake Plantain may catch our attention for different reasons, but together they remind us that the forest is not a collection of separate objects. It is a living community.

I am glad I stopped long enough to photograph these unusual leaves. Their name first sparked my curiosity, but learning that they belonged to a native orchid made the discovery even more special.
