Common Mullein’s Second Year: The Velvet Rosette Preparing to Flower

For several years, I did not really maintain my vegetable garden.

I still grew a few familiar Korean vegetables and herbs in containers on the porch—perilla, lettuce, minari, dolnamul, and tomatoes—but I mostly left the garden itself alone.

Before long, volunteer plants began filling the open ground.

Some people might look at them and see only weeds.

I do not really think of them that way.

Curly dock and broadleaf dock appeared, along with oxeye daisy, plantain, two kinds of thistle, common vetch, bird’s-foot trefoil, self-heal, and many other plants that had found their own places in my forgotten garden.

Then one especially large plant caught my attention.

Its broad gray-green leaves were covered in such dense, soft hairs that they looked almost like velvet. The leaves spread outward around the base, but the center of the plant was beginning to change. A tightly folded structure was rising from the middle.

I wondered:

What is this soft plant, and what is beginning to grow at its center?

A plant-identification app suggested Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus). As always, I treated the app as a starting clue—not a final identification—and compared the plant’s leaves, growth habit, and developing center with reliable botanical references.

The features appeared consistent with Common Mullein.

What made this discovery especially interesting was its timing. I had not found a tiny seedling or a fully blooming plant. I had found mullein during the quiet stage when its future flower stalk was just beginning to form.

What Is Common Mullein?

Common name: Common Mullein, Great Mullein, Woolly Mullein
Scientific name: Verbascum thapsus
Family: Scrophulariaceae, the figwort family
Life cycle: Usually biennial
Native range: Europe, northern Africa, and Asia
North American status: Introduced and widely naturalized
Typical habitat: Sunny roadsides, fields, pastures, forest openings, gardens, and other disturbed ground

Common Mullein is famous for two features that seem almost impossible to belong to the same plant.

First, it forms a low rosette of large, soft, woolly leaves.

Later, it can produce a tall flowering stalk covered with small yellow flowers. Under favorable conditions, that stalk may grow 6 to 10 feet tall.

When Does Mullein Form Its Flower Stalk?

Common Mullein is usually a two-year plant.

That means it normally does not produce its tall flowering stalk during its first growing season. The usual growth cycle looks like this:

First Year: The Velvet Rosette

After a seed germinates, the young plant develops a basal rosette—a circle of leaves growing close to the ground.

During this first year, the plant puts much of its energy into its leaves, crown, and root system. It usually does not flower.

This is the stage many people recognize as a large patch of soft, gray-green leaves.

Between Seasons: Waiting Close to the Ground

Depending on the climate, the rosette or its central crown may remain through winter and resume growth when conditions become favorable.

From above, it can still look quiet and low. Much of the preparation for the next stage is happening before the dramatic upward growth begins.

Second Year: The Flower Stalk Rises

In its second year, Common Mullein usually sends a thick stalk upward from the center of the rosette.

At first, the new growth is tightly folded and compact—just like the center shown in my photographs. As it lengthens, leaves develop along the stalk and become progressively smaller toward the top.

The upper portion eventually becomes a dense flower spike. Small, five-lobed yellow flowers open gradually, often only a few at a time.

The plant in my garden appears to be at the beginning of this second-year flowering stage. It has not opened any yellow flowers yet, but the central structure suggests that the stalk is preparing to rise.

Common Mullein does not follow an exact calendar in every situation. The USDA Forest Service notes that annual and three-year forms occasionally occur. Still, the first-year rosette followed by a second-year flowering stalk is the typical pattern.

After Flowering: Seeds and the End of the Cycle

After pollination, the yellow flowers are replaced by seed capsules.

Once the seeds mature, a typical biennial mullein plant dies. Its dry brown stalk may remain standing long after the growing season has ended.

The plant may be gone, but its story can continue underground. Mullein produces many tiny seeds, and some can remain viable in the soil for decades. When soil is disturbed and the seeds are brought close enough to the surface to receive light, new plants may appear.

This helped me understand why mullein found its way into my old garden.

The garden was not empty simply because I had stopped maintaining neat rows. Its soil held an unseen seed bank, waiting for sunlight, open ground, and the right season.

Once I stopped deciding what should grow in every corner, nature began making some of those decisions for me.

How I Recognize Mullein at This Stage

I never identify a wild plant from one fuzzy leaf or one app result alone. For this plant, I looked for a consistent combination of features:

  • A broad rosette growing from a central crown
  • Thick, gray-green leaves
  • Dense, soft, woolly hairs on both sides of the leaves
  • Prominent branching veins on the leaf underside
  • Mostly smooth or gently wavy leaf edges rather than deeply divided leaves
  • A tightly developing central stalk
  • Leaves that will become smaller and alternate as the stalk elongates
  • Eventually, a dense terminal spike of small yellow flowers

The soft texture is an excellent clue, but “fuzzy” is not a complete identification. Lamb’s Ear (Stachys byzantina) and other woolly plants can look similar at a quick glance.

Lamb’s Ear is a spreading perennial in the mint family. It commonly grows in clusters, has opposite leaves along its flowering stems, and usually produces pinkish-purple flowers.

Common Mullein is typically biennial and usually develops a much taller, more upright stalk with alternate leaves and yellow flowers.

Seeing the mature flowers and fruit can make identification much stronger. Since my plant has not yet bloomed, I will continue watching it as its features develop.

Why Did Mullein Choose This Part of My Garden?

Common Mullein often grows in sunny, disturbed ground—places that have been cultivated, cleared, dug, burned, logged, or otherwise opened.

That description fits an old vegetable garden surprisingly well.

University of Wisconsin Extension explains that mullein seeds need light for good germination and that seeds near the surface may sprout after soil disturbance. It also reports that seeds have germinated after 100 years in the long-running Beal seed experiment.

Perhaps this plant began from a seed that had been waiting in the soil long before I noticed it.

I used to think I had simply neglected this part of the garden.

Now I see it differently.

It became a place where plants could introduce themselves to me.

Mullein’s Traditional Herbal Story

Mullein has a long history of traditional herbal use, especially in preparations connected with the throat and respiratory system.

Leaves and flowers have traditionally been prepared in teas and extracts. However, traditional use is not the same as a proven medical treatment.

The European Medicines Agency recognizes the long-standing traditional use of dried mullein flowers for relieving a sore throat associated with a dry cough and cold. It also clearly notes that this conclusion is based on traditional use and that clinical studies are lacking.

That distinction is important to me.

I can respect the history of a plant without claiming that a homemade preparation can diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, or another illness.

My plant has not produced flowers yet, so I have not harvested any. If I later work with the flowers, I want to learn about them separately and carefully.

My First Small Mullein Tincture Experiment

Because this mullein was growing on our own unsprayed property, I harvested only a modest number of leaves and made a small experimental tincture.

I chopped and rolled the leaves, placed them in a clean jar, and covered them with tequila.

This was my first mullein tincture experiment—not a tested recipe or a treatment that I am recommending to others.

At first, I heard that it should sit for six months. As I researched further, I learned that time alone does not determine whether a homemade extract is properly prepared.

The plant part, whether it is fresh or dried, the herb-to-liquid ratio, alcohol percentage, sanitation, storage, intended use, personal health conditions, and possible medication interactions all matter.

I labeled the jar with the plant name, plant part, date, and alcohol used. Before deciding whether or how to use it, I want qualified guidance from someone who understands herbal preparations and health interactions.

Careful learning is also part of herbalism.

A Note About Mullein’s Fine Hairs

The same hairs that make mullein feel like velvet can irritate sensitive skin, eyes, or the throat.

When preparing tea from correctly identified mullein leaves, strain it first through a fine-mesh strainer and then through a paper coffee filter before drinking. The leaves are covered with tiny hairs that may pass through an ordinary tea strainer and irritate the mouth or throat.

Careful filtration can help reduce this physical irritation, but it cannot prevent a true allergic reaction. Stop using the tea if irritation or allergy-like symptoms occur.

I also do not recommend smoking mullein. A history of traditional smoking does not make smoke safe for the lungs.

What About Dogs and Cats?

A subscriber once mentioned that pets might experience allergy-like irritation around mullein. The comment encouraged me to look into the question more carefully.

I could not verify that simply walking past Common Mullein is known to cause an allergic reaction in dogs or cats, so I would not present that claim as an established fact.

Still, the dense hairs may act as a physical irritant, and pets should not be allowed to chew unfamiliar wild plants or seeds.

If an animal develops eye irritation, drooling, vomiting, breathing difficulty, unusual itching, or another concerning symptom after plant exposure, contacting a veterinarian is the safest choice.

Foraging and Herbal Safety

⚠️ Never harvest or use a wild plant unless you are 100 percent certain of its identification.

Plant-identification apps can provide a useful clue, but they can be wrong. Confirm the plant with several reliable references and, when possible, a knowledgeable local expert.

Avoid harvesting beside roads, heavy traffic, sprayed fields, utility corridors, polluted soil, or any place where herbicides, pesticides, or other contaminants may be present.

Mullein’s fine hairs may irritate the skin, eyes, and throat. Handle it carefully if you are sensitive, and learn proper fine filtration before preparing any liquid product.

Do not smoke mullein or inhale plant smoke as a respiratory remedy.

Do not put homemade herbal oil into an ear without medical guidance, especially if there may be severe infection, drainage, ear tubes, or a damaged eardrum.

Safety during pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, and use with medications or chronic health conditions may not be established. Ask an appropriate healthcare professional before using a concentrated herbal preparation.

Traditional use does not guarantee that a plant is safe or appropriate for every person, and it does not prove that the plant can prevent, treat, or cure disease.

If harvesting is not on private property, always check and follow local laws and land-use rules.

The Next Chapter of This Mullein Story

For now, I am watching this plant slowly change.

The stalk has not yet stretched high above the garden, and there are no open yellow flowers to show you. I do not want to use someone else’s photograph or create a substitute just to complete the life cycle visually.

When I eventually find a mullein with its tall flower stalk covered in yellow blooms, I will photograph it myself and introduce that mature stage in another blog post and video.

That future story can explore how the flowers open, how the seed capsules form, and how dramatically the plant changes from its low velvet rosette.

For now, these three photographs preserve an equally meaningful moment:

the moment just before the mullein begins to rise.
