Queen Anne’s Lace: The Wild Carrot I Mistook for My Garden Carrots

Have you ever planted vegetables in neat, straight rows—only to find almost identical leaves appearing everywhere except in those rows?

That is how my 17-year story with wild carrot began.

Seventeen years ago, when I first started a vegetable garden here in Washington, my husband and I planted carrots because we both loved them. I carefully made straight lines and sowed the seeds in orderly rows.

Then, around May and June, carrot-like leaves began popping up all over the garden.

I knew where I had planted my carrots, so why were these familiar-looking leaves growing everywhere else?

I asked my husband, and he said, “As far as I know, that is wild carrot—but I don’t know whether people eat it.”

He knew its name, but not how to identify it with certainty or whether it was something we should use. Curious, I pulled up one of the plants. Instead of the thick orange carrot I expected, it had only a small, pale root.

What was this plant?

I kept wondering, and the years quietly passed. Now, 17 years later, I recognize the plant through its full life cycle: the feathery young leaves, the coarse hairs on the stem, the white umbrella-shaped flower cluster, and the flower head that eventually curls inward as the seeds mature.

What Is Queen Anne’s Lace?

Queen Anne’s lace, also called wild carrot, is Daucus carota, a member of the carrot and parsley family, Apiaceae.

The cultivated carrot belongs to the same species; the familiar garden form is generally classified as Daucus carota subsp. sativus. That family connection explains why the foliage can look and smell so much like the carrots we plant in our gardens.

Wild carrot is usually a biennial. During its first year, it often forms a low rosette of finely divided leaves. In its second year, it sends up a flowering stem and produces clusters of tiny white flowers arranged in a compound umbel—an umbrella-like structure characteristic of the carrot family.

The wild root is usually pale rather than orange, and it may remain narrow, fibrous, or woody, especially after the plant begins flowering. That is why the little root I pulled 17 years ago looked nothing like the garden carrot I expected.

Why Is It Called Queen Anne’s Lace?

When viewed from above, the hundreds of tiny white flowers resemble a delicate piece of handmade lace.

A popular legend says that Queen Anne pricked her finger while making lace, and a drop of blood landed in the center. This story is often connected to the single dark purple or reddish floret that sometimes appears in the middle of a Queen Anne’s lace flower head.

It is a lovely piece of folklore rather than a proven history of the name.

The central purple floret is also not present on every wild carrot flower. Its absence does not rule out Queen Anne’s lace, and its presence should never be used as the only identification feature.

How I Recognize Wild Carrot

Wild carrot has several helpful characteristics, but I never depend on just one of them.

1. Coarse Hairs on the Stem

The green stem is covered with visible, stiff hairs. The old memory aid “Queen Anne has hairy legs” can help us remember this feature.

But hairs are only one clue—not permission to eat a plant. Identification must be based on the whole plant.

2. Finely Divided, Carrot-Like Leaves

The leaves are feathery and divided again and again into small toothed segments. They can resemble both carrot tops and parsley.

3. A Dense White Compound Umbel

Many tiny white flowers grow together to form a lace-like umbrella. The flower cluster is usually denser and more compact than the looser clusters of poison hemlock.

4. Narrow, Divided Bracts Below the Flower Head

Look underneath the umbel. Queen Anne’s lace commonly has long, narrow, divided green bracts radiating below the flowers. These are one of its especially useful flowering-stage clues.

5. A Flower Head That Curls Inward

As the seeds mature, the umbel often folds inward and forms a cup or “bird’s nest” shape. An unopened flower head may also be cupped, so I look at the plant’s other features and growth stage as well.

6. A Carrot-Like Aroma—but Never as the Deciding Test

Wild carrot foliage and root may have a familiar carroty fragrance. Poison hemlock is often described as musty when crushed.

I do not recommend crushing, smelling, tasting, or touching an unidentified member of the carrot family to decide what it is. Odor varies, and a smell test is not reliable enough for a family that contains deadly species.

Wild Carrot vs. Poison Hemlock

The most important look-alike is poison hemlock (Conium maculatum). Every part of poison hemlock is toxic, and ingesting even a small amount can be fatal.

Stem

  • Wild carrot: Green and covered with coarse, stiff hairs
  • Poison hemlock: Smooth, hairless, hollow, and commonly marked with reddish-purple spots or streaks

Typical Height

  • Wild carrot: Often about 1–4 feet tall
  • Poison hemlock: Commonly 6–10 feet tall when mature

Leaves

  • Wild carrot: Finely divided, carrot-like, and often hairy
  • Poison hemlock: Bright green, finely divided, and hairless

Flowers

  • Wild carrot: Usually forms dense, lace-like white umbels and may have one dark central floret
  • Poison hemlock: Usually produces multiple looser white umbels

Below the Flowers

  • Wild carrot: Often has long, narrow, divided bracts beneath the flower head
  • Poison hemlock: Does not have the same distinctive skirt of divided bracts

Root

  • Wild carrot: Usually has a pale, slender taproot that may become woody
  • Poison hemlock: May also have a white, carrot-like root, so the root is never a safe deciding feature

The hairy stem is an excellent clue, but it is not enough by itself. I want to see a consistent combination of the stem, leaves, bracts, flower structure, growth habit, and the plant’s changes through the season.

Other members of the carrot family—including highly toxic water hemlocks (Cicuta species)—can also create dangerous confusion. If any feature does not fit, I leave the plant alone.

Cooking, drying, or tasting does not make a misidentified poison hemlock safe.

How I Use the Young Leaves

I use only young leaves from established patches that I have observed through their full growth and flowering cycle and identified with complete confidence.

To me, the tender leaves taste a little like parsley, a little like carrot tops, and slightly sweet. I sometimes chop a small amount into a salad, but I especially enjoy adding them to chowder or soup as an aromatic green.

I also like the idea of combining a little wild carrot leaf with prickly lettuce. Prickly lettuce brings a pleasant bitterness, while the wild carrot leaf adds a sweeter, aromatic note. For my taste, the two can balance each other nicely.

That is my personal experience, not a suggestion to sample an unfamiliar plant. Because a mistake within the carrot family can be deadly, anyone who cannot verify every important feature should not harvest it for food.

Once the plant sends up a tall flower stalk, the leaves become tougher and stronger tasting. At that point, I stop thinking of it as a tender green and simply enjoy its flowers and watch its life cycle.

Wild Does Not Automatically Mean Safer

Recent produce recalls remind us that food safety matters wherever our vegetables come from. However, wild greens are not automatically cleaner or safer than supermarket vegetables.

Wild plants may be exposed to animal waste, contaminated runoff, pesticides, herbicides, road dust, or other pollutants. Washing is important, but it cannot remove every possible contaminant. Choosing a clean harvesting site comes first.

I never harvest beside roads, in sprayed areas, near polluted water, or from land where I do not know what has been applied. I prefer quiet, clean places that I know well, and I still wash harvested greens carefully before using them.

A Washington Note

In Washington, wild carrot is listed as a Class C noxious weed. Because it is already widespread, control requirements vary by location.

It is also on the state quarantine list, which means the wild form cannot legally be bought, sold, or offered for sale in Washington. The culinary cultivated carrot is excluded from that restriction. King County’s current wild-carrot guidance

Always check current state, county, and land-management rules before harvesting or moving any wild plant.

Foraging Safety

⚠️ Never eat any wild plant unless you are 100% certain of its identification.

Members of the carrot family can be especially dangerous because edible and deadly species may look similar. Do not rely on one clue, one photo, an app, smell, or taste. Confirm multiple characteristics and, when necessary, consult a qualified local botanist, Extension office, or other experienced professional.

Avoid harvesting near roads, heavy traffic, sprayed areas, polluted water, animal-waste concentration areas, or anywhere contamination may be present. Harvest only from clean environments.

If harvesting anywhere other than your own private property, always check and follow local harvesting laws, regulations, and land-use rules.
